Getting Your Home Ready for Fall Gatherings — Without Redoing Anything
Summer's winding down. The kids are heading back to school, the mornings are just barely starting to feel different, and if you're anything like most of us, you're already thinking about who's coming over between now and New Year's — the Labor Day cookout, the football season Saturdays, Thanksgiving, the extended-family stopovers, that friend passing through in October.
The good news is you don't need to redecorate. A few small changes make your home feel completely ready. Here's what we tell customers this time of year.
1. Swap Your Textiles First
Textiles are the fastest way to change how a room feels. You don't have to move a piece of furniture or paint anything.
Throw pillows. Rotate your summer pillows out and bring in something warmer — deeper tones, richer textures, a little weight. Even swapping just two pillows on your sofa changes the whole room.
Throws and blankets. A folded throw over the arm of a chair or draped across a sectional signals cozy from across the room. Chunky knits, wool blends, or anything with texture works.
Area rugs. If you have the storage, swap a lighter summer rug for something more grounded — richer color, more pattern. If not, adding a runner or a small accent rug works just as well.
You can do all three of these in an afternoon.
2. Rethink Your Seating for a Bigger Group
The number one thing we hear at this time of year is that people are hosting and don't have enough places to sit. Three ways to fix it without buying a second sofa:
Add an accent chair. One well-placed chair — swiveled toward the sofa, or pulled up to the coffee table — adds a spot and changes the shape of the room. Bonus: it stays useful long after the guests leave.
Use an ottoman as flexible seating. A large ottoman doubles as a footrest most days and an extra seat when you need it. If you can find one with hidden storage, even better.
Rearrange for conversation. Sometimes the fix isn't a new piece — it's pulling everything closer. Most rooms are set up for TV watching, not talking. For a party, pull the furniture in a foot or two.
3. Refresh Your Guest Bedroom (Even If It's Really an Office)
If you have a spare room that becomes a guest room a few times a year, spend an hour making it feel prepared:
Fresh bedding. Even if it's the same sheets and comforter, wash them now so they smell like clean linen when someone arrives, not like storage.
A lamp with a soft bulb by the bed. Overhead lights are harsh at night. A warm-glow bulb on a small bedside lamp makes the whole room feel like a place someone actually wants to sleep.
Small welcome touches. A folded towel on the bed, a small plate of something on the nightstand, a bottle of water. These take five minutes and make guests remember you.
4. Light Your Living Room for Evening
Days are getting shorter. If your only living room light is the ceiling fixture, you're going to feel it by October.
Warm bulbs, not cool. Look for 2700K or 3000K bulbs — anything higher reads as office, not home. Swap two or three main fixtures.
Add a floor lamp behind a chair. One tall lamp in a corner completely changes how a room reads at night. Choose one with a shade — direct-bulb floor lamps are harsh.
A seasonal candle. We know it sounds small. It's not. One candle in the front hall for the season shifts the whole tone of your house.
5. Get Your Dining Room Ready for a Bigger Crowd
Add the leaves back into your table. Most families remove them in summer and forget by fall. Do it now.
Round up more chairs. Borrow, buy, or bring the ones out of the office. Nobody minds sitting in a slightly different chair at Thanksgiving.
A runner and a bowl. That's it. A neutral runner, a bowl of pears or gourds or pine cones. Simple looks intentional.
One Last Thing
Fall gatherings aren't about a perfect house. Nobody remembers your rug. They remember that your couch was comfortable, that they weren't standing the whole night, that the room felt warm when they walked in.
If you're missing a piece — a chair, a pillow, an ottoman, a bedside lamp — come by the store. We're happy to help you find one thing that solves your specific problem, and get you out the door before dinner.
